Can you make an electric scooter go faster
Updated 16 October 2026 · AURORIDE dealer briefing
Short answer for dealers: mechanically, often yes — legally, no. Removing a speed limiter takes a vehicle out of the class it was approved in. That voids the conformity declaration, usually voids the warranty, and can leave the rider uninsured. The compliant answer is to sell a faster machine that was built and approved to be faster.
Why the limiter is there in the first place
The speed cap is not a marketing decision, it is a condition of approval. The braking distance, the frame fatigue case, the lighting, the tyre rating and the EMC test were all performed at a specific maximum speed. Raise the speed and none of those results describe the vehicle any more.
What changes the moment you derestrict
| Area | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Approval | The unit no longer matches its declaration of conformity or national certificate |
| Insurance | Cover is written for a class; a modified vehicle may fall outside it |
| Warranty | Controller, motor and battery failures from higher load are excluded |
| Liability | Whoever performed the modification takes on the manufacturer's obligation |
| Enforcement | Rolling-road and roadside checks in several markets measure speed directly |
Sell the right class instead
- Public road, Germany: N5, 350 W, ABE, 20 km/h.
- Public road, EU: N8 and N9 — 20 km/h for Germany, Poland and Hungary; 25 km/h for France, Italy and Spain.
- Private land and trails: X5 at 55 km/h, X5 Max at 65 km/h — supplied and labelled as off-road machines.
- Both: X7 PRO, 25 km/h road mode and a 60 km/h mode for private land.
- Moped-style transport: M3 at 55 km/h, for customers who want a two-wheeler with road presence.
- Weather protection at 45 km/h: the Q6e L6e quadricycle — a different approval regime, and a bigger ticket.
Legitimate performance improvements you can sell
Speed is off the table; everything else is margin:
- Tyres with the correct compound and pressure — the biggest real-world change in how a scooter feels
- Battery health checks and replacement packs, which restore acceleration as well as range
- Brake servicing and upgraded pads
- Suspension and stem inspection, which is what riders actually notice at speed
Frequently asked
Is the customer breaking the law, or am I?
Both can be exposed. The rider commits the use offence; the party that modified the vehicle takes on the conformity obligation. Do not do the work.
What if a competitor shop does it?
Then you have a differentiator worth advertising: "we sell legal, we service legal, we warranty legal".
Can I sell an off-road model to a road customer?
Only with the restriction stated clearly at the point of sale and in writing. If you suspect it will be ridden on the road, sell the homologated configuration.
